Shabbat Shalom, y’all!

We’re in the book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/)Vayikra, reading in Shemini.

+++++ There was ++++ evening and morning

test everything, hold tight to what is good – 1 Thessalonians 5:21

֍ ֍ ֍  What is this Torah portion about?

This week we continue reading in the Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) – Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.”

This parashah, Shemini, tells of the consecration of the Tabernacle, the deaths of Nadab and Abihu, and the dietary laws of kashrut (כַּשְׁרוּת). (<<— edited from wikipedia)

֍ ֍ ֍ Where are we in our studies?

The Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) The English name Leviticus comes from the Latin Leviticus, which is in turn from the Greek Greek Λευιτικόν, Leuitikon, referring the priestly tribe of the Israelites, “Levi.” The Greek expression is in turn a variant of the rabbinic Hebrew torat kohanim, “law of priests.”

In Hebrew, the book is called Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.”

So many read Acts 10 and say: “There you have it. All things are now clean for food.”

Little do they know that this text has NOTHING to do with food. This video is critical for anyone who thinks Acts 10 is about God redefining His dietary instructions.

NOTE: For Older Testament passages I’ve become rather interested in reading them in the Septuagint. I know some passages are different there comparably, but the Septuagint seems to have more depth in understanding than the Bibles translated using the Masoretic text created in about 600-1000 A.D.

This is compared to the origins of the Septuagint.

The Septuagint is the very first translation of the Hebrew Bible from Hebrew to another language, Greek. It’s believed that it was probably translated as early as the third century BC. The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek is traditionally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt (285-246 BC).
