֍ ֍ ֍ What is this Torah portion about?
This week we continue reading in the Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) – Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.”
The parashah, Behar, tells the laws of the Sabbatical year (שמיטה, Shmita) and limits debt servitude, and, Bechukotai, addresses blessings for obeying the Torah, curses for disobeying it, and vows. (<<— edited from wikipedia)
֍ ֍ ֍ Where are we in our studies?
The Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) The English name Leviticus comes from the Latin Leviticus, which is in turn from the Greek Greek Λευιτικόν, Leuitikon, referring the priestly tribe of the Israelites, “Levi.” The Greek expression is, in turn, a variant of the rabbinic Hebrew torat kohanim,[2] “law of priests.”
In Hebrew, the book is called Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.
