The Blasphemer

֍ ֍ ֍ What is this Torah portion about?

This week we continue reading in the Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) – Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.”

The parashah. Emor describes purity rules for priests (כֹּהֲנִים, Kohanim), recounts the holy days, describes the preparations for the lights and bread in the sanctuary, and tells the story of a blasphemer and his punishment. (<<— from wikipedia)

֍ ֍ ֍ Where are we in our studies?

The Book of Leviticus (/lɪˈvɪtɪkəs/) The English name Leviticus comes from the Latin Leviticus, which is in turn from the Greek Greek Λευιτικόν, Leuitikon, referring the priestly tribe of the Israelites, “Levi.” The Greek expression is, in turn, a variant of the rabbinic Hebrew torat kohanim,[2] “law of priests.”

In Hebrew, the book is called Vayikra (Hebrew: וַיִּקְרָא), from the first word of the book, Vayikra, “He [Yehovah] called.”

֍ ֍ ֍ What is our study called?

Study’s name

Emor (אֱמֹר — Hebrew for “speak or Say”)

31 Emor 6 May 2023, 15 Iyyar 5783, Leviticus 21:1–24:23, Ezekiel 44:15–31, Matthew 26:59–66; 26:64

֍ ֍ ֍ ֍ Torah:

֍ ֍ ֍ ֍ hafTarah or Prophets

֍ ֍ ֍ ֍ Brit Hadassah

֍ ֍ ֍ “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth”

An “eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth” is a misunderstood Hebraic idiom. Did our Messiah change this commandment, or simply clarify it?
