We’re in the book of Exodus (Shemot), reading in Mishpatim.

test everything, hold tight to what is good – 1 Thessalonians 5:21

֍ ֍ ֍ What is this Torah portion about?

This week we continue in the book of Exodus (Shemot).

Mishpatim, also known as the Covenant Code, is a parashah that contains a collection of laws. These laws were given to the people of Israel as part of the covenant with Yehovah.

The parashah outlines various regulations and guidelines that govern different aspects of the community’s behavior and interactions. It emphasizes the importance of justice, fairness, and ethical conduct.

Mishpatim serves as a significant milestone in the establishment of a just and orderly society based on divine principles.

This week’s reading from Exodus 21:1–24:18, along with the accompanying passages from Isaiah 66:1–24 and Mark 9:40–50, further explore the themes of righteousness, worship, and the consequences of one’s actions.

Does God’s Law Prohibit Cheeseburgers?

Believe it or not, in some circles, cheeseburgers are debated. This debate comes more from the mainstream Rabbinic interpretation of Deuteronomy 14:21 about mixing meat and dairy. Does God really prohibit us eating cheeseburgers in His Torah?

Are All Things Clean? (Mark 7:19)

Many teach that in Mark 7:19 Yeshua declared all food as clean. We agree that all food is clean. The real question to be answered is what Messiah was really saying. What is the true context of this verse? Did Yeshua really declare all things clean?

Can We Eat All Things? (1 Timothy 4)

1 Timothy 4:4 is a verse often cited to support the typical understanding that God has abolished some of His commandments, specifically in this case, the dietary instructions. This appears to be a valid claim when the verse is examined in isolation. However, as soon as we employ sound hermeneutical principles by incorporating surrounding context, we find that 1 Timothy 4:4 actually teaches us that God’s dietary instructions are not abolished at all. In fact, we find that 1 Timothy 4 actually proves that we should still be keeping God’s dietary instructions. This 30 minute teaching is essential to anyone still struggling with Paul’s letters and his teachings on the law.

NOTE: For Older Testament passages I’ve become rather interested in reading them in the Septuagint. I know some passages are different there comparably, but the Septuagint seems to have more depth in understanding than the Bibles translated using the Masoretic text created in about 600-1000 A.D.

This is compared to the origins of the Septuagint.

The Septuagint is the very first translation of the Hebrew Bible from Hebrew to another language, Greek. It’s believed that it was probably translated as early as the third century BC.

The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek is traditionally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt (285-246 BC).
