V’Zot HaBerachah

54th Torah Portion – Deuteronomy/Devarim (דְּבָרִים) called V’Zot HaBerachah for 8, October 2023

Variants: VeZos HaBerachah, VeZot Haberakha, V’Zeis Habrocho, V’Zaus Haberocho, V’Zois Haberuchu, Wazoth Habborocho, or Zos Habrocho

This year, 2023, this is the 7th day of Sukkot so the portion called Sukkot 2 is included with this one. NOTE: This link opens on the same page since it’s an internal link.

Shabbat Shalom, y’all!

We’re in the book of Devarim (Hebrew: דְּבָרִים Dəḇārīm, lit. '[the] words [of Moses]’) reading in V’Zot HaBerachah, וְזֹאת הַבְּרָכָה

Portion sets out the farewell Blessing of Moses for the 12 Tribes of Israel and concludes with the death of Moses. (<<— edited from wikipedia)

֍ ֍ ֍  Where Are We in Our Studies?

We are in the book of Deuteronomy (Greek: Δευτερονόμιον Deuteronómion, lit. ’second law’) NOTE: Yahweh is NOT Yah’s name. At best it is a scholar’s guess and a bad one at that. His real name is Yehovah.

Devarim is a plural word. The root is Davar which means, word, speech, or thing. So “devarim” means words, speech, or things. I agree with Yirmiyahu Ben Azriel that “words” is the best translation in this context.

You should know that Devarim is not the Hebrew word for Deuteronomy. Deuteronomy is Greek for “second law.” Meaning the second giving of the law. Mosheh expounds on where they’ve come from and admonishes how to proceed.

by Hebraic Family Fellowship

Join Dr. David Jones of Ruach Ministries, a Saturday Church Pastor, as he looks at the Old Testament (Torah Portion) weekly readings through the lens of Yeshua/Jesus the Messiah.

He used Yahweh throughout this video, but Yehovah is our creator’s real name. Yahweh is the name Wilhelm Gesenius claimed was the real name of Yah, but he said it is an Egyptian name, not Hebrew.

Today the scholarship class agrees with him even tho they’ve never verified it. Here is a video about The Historical Origins of Yahweh you can watch it on YouTube here or you can 👉 Watch the full episode @Nehemiaswall here.

Perhaps I will add this video to the site somewhere.

NOTE: For Older Testament passages I’ve become rather interested in reading them in the Septuagint. I know some passages are different there comparably, but the Septuagint seems to have more depth in understanding than the Bibles translated using the Masoretic text created in about 600-1000 A.D.

This is compared to the origins of the Septuagint.

Vezot ha’Bracha - renewedhealthandvitality.com
“Zebulun . . . and Issachar . . . shall suck the abundance of the seas and the hidden treasures of the sand.” (Deuteronomy 33:18–19.)

The Septuagint is the very first translation of the Hebrew Bible from Hebrew to another language into Greek. It’s believed that it was probably translated as early as the third century BC.

The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek is traditionally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt (285-246 BC).
