5th Portion in Genesis/Bereshit בְּרֵאשִׁית called Chayei Sarah, חַיֵּי שָׂרָה – for 23 November ‘24
Chayei Sarah, Chaye Sarah, Hayye Sarah, Hayyei Sara
Shabbat Shalom, y’all!
We’re in the book of Genesis (Bereshit) reading Cheyei Sarah.
+++++ There was ++++ evening and morning
test everything, hold tight to what is good – 1 Thessalonians 5:21
֍ ֍ ֍ What is this Torah portion about?
The parashah, Cheyei Sarah, tells us that Sarah died and tells the story of Abraham’s negotiations to purchase a burial place for his wife Sarah and his servant’s mission to find a wife for Abraham’s son Isaac. (<<— edited by me from wikipedia)
֍ ֍ ֍ Where are we in our studies?
We are in the Book of Genesis (from Greek Γένεσις, Génesis; Biblical Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית, romanized: Bərēʾšīṯ, “In [the] beginning”)
NOTE: Yahweh is NOT Yah’s name. At best it is a scholar’s guess and a bad one. His real name is pronounced Yehovah.

Abraham and the Cave of the Patriarchs: Parshat Chayei Sarah
Torah Parshat Chayei Sarah relates the story of Abraham’s purchase of the Cave of The Patriarchs (Ma’arat Hamachpela) in Hebron. The site today remains a holy place to both Jews and Muslims who believe that it is the final resting place of Abraham, Sarah, and their extended family. —
This is an episode from the weekly Torah cartoon from BimBam.com. Each week, a different storyteller – some musical, some poetic, some just straight-up, tells the story of the current Torah portion…and then we animate it!

NOTE: For Older Testament passages I’ve become rather interested in reading them in the Septuagint.
I know some passages are different there comparably, but the Septuagint seems to have more depth in understanding than the Bibles translated using the Masoretic text created in about 600-1000 A.D.
This is compared to the origins of the Septuagint.
The Septuagint is the very first translation of the Hebrew Bible from Hebrew to another language, Greek. It’s believed that it was probably translated as early as the third century BC.
The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek is traditionally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt (285-246 BC).
