֍ ֍ ֍  What is this Torah Portion About?

֍ ֍ ֍ The parashah tells the stories of Abraham’s three visitors and Abraham’s bargaining with Yehovah over Sodom and Gomorrah.

Lot’s two visitors and Lot’s bargaining with the Sodomites, the flight of Lot and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, how Lot’s daughters became pregnant by their father.

Abraham once again passed off his wife Sarah as his sister, the birth of Isaac, the expulsion of Hagar, disputes over wells, and the binding of Isaac. (<<— from wikipedia)

֍ ֍ ֍  Where Are We in Our Studies?

We are in the Book of Genesis (from Greek Γένεσις, Génesis; Biblical Hebrew: בְּרֵאשִׁית, romanized: Bərēʾšīṯ, “In [the] beginning”) NOTE: Yahweh is NOT Yah’s name. At best it is a scholar’s guess and a bad one at that. His real name is pronounced Yehovah.

VAYERA: Lot, Sodom and Gomorrah: How Abraham Bargained with God

Sodom was a town filled with wicked people who drank too much, got into mischief and who knows what else.

God didn’t like it and planned to destroy the city and everyone in it. But then, Abraham decided to try to bargain with God to save his beloved nephew, Lot.

Find out what happens in this parsha video featuring “Unorthodox” podcast host Mark Oppenheimer.

NOTE: For Older Testament passages I’ve become rather interested in reading them in the Septuagint.

I know some passages are different there comparably, but the Septuagint seems to have more depth in understanding than the Bibles translated using the Masoretic text created in about 600-1000 A.D.

This is compared to the origins of the Septuagint.

The Septuagint is the very first translation of the Hebrew Bible from Hebrew to another language, Greek. It’s believed that it was probably translated as early as the third century BC. The Septuagint translation of the Hebrew Bible into Greek is traditionally dated to the reign of Ptolemy II Philadelphus of Egypt (285-246 BC).
